The Turkish Grand Prix is held near the centre of Istanbul and is also close to the International Airport, making it the perfect Grand Prix for tourists to visit, especially since Istanbul has been named as the European Capital of Culture for 2010.
The Istanbul Park Circuit opened in 2005, and is another Hermann Tilke design. The track follows the landscape on which it is built, and so it rises and falls with the hills – drivers are rarely ever racing totally horizontally. There are still plenty of opportunities for overtaking though, and the downhill turns mean that the lap can get pretty high-speed at times. But the Turkish Grand Prix is a real test on the car engines which are made to struggle at this circuit more so than at any other in the F1 calendar.
The Turkish Grand Prix is best known for Turn 8 which is notorious with all of the racers, and is often considered as the best anywhere in the world. It consists of four little bends combined into a single corner of the track that racers must get through at speeds reaching 270kph. There is no room for error at Turn 8, and so it receives full attention from drivers and spectators alike.
