The German Grand Prix will take place at a circuit on the outskirts of Hockenheim, near Mannheim – the city where Carl Benz invented and produced the very first motor cars, which went on to become Mercedes Benz. The circuit was originally built in 1932 for motorcycle racing and was expanded by Mercededs Benz four years later to test their cars.
The German Grand Prix saw some tragic deaths due to the high-speed nature of the lap (Jim Clark in the 60s and Patrick Depailler in the 80s). As a result, chicanes were added to the main straights which split them up into four smaller straights connected by tight corners.
But with safety still an issue, a modern track was designed and constructed by Hermann Tilke in the early noughties, in order to meet safety regulations and be more spectator friendly. The original 1932 Stadium Section at the end of the lap which consists of several tight corners still remains in the new circuit.
This is an interesting circuit because cars can perform very well here but struggle at other locations, and so it is a difficult race to predict. The first half of the lap is still fairly quick because of the long straight that runs down to the back hairpin, whilst the rest of the track is a combination of mid-speed corners. Since the circuit is pretty flat, spectators are able to view the majority of the race from the grandstand seats.
The race at the Hockenheim circuit is often dominated by high temperatures, which can create problems for the tyres, especially at the key hairpin turn where there is the highest chance of overtaking. This is often one of the main contributing factors in determining where the drivers rank in the race.
